A Good and Faithful Servant

Last week, the Davis High School Marching Band took center stage in one of the most prestigious marching events in the U.S.: the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Each year, up to 60 million people tune in to watch the broadcast and the Macy's Parade has become an important part of many families' holiday traditions.

Steven Hendricks, director of bands at Davis High School in Kayesville, UT, sees this event as his Swan Song as he retires from 30 years of service as a music educator.

I had the privilege of catching up with Steve earlier this week and we talked about his career which has included more highlights than many band directors could ever dream of!

Over the past three decades, Steve has conducted his band at the Midwest Clinic, marched in two Tournament of Roses Parades, consistently received highest honors at state and regional marching and concert assessment, and most recently took his band to New York to March in the Thanksgiving Parade.

In this interview, Steve talks about how he developed a nationally recognized program, which has excelled in the concert hall and on the field. He even gives advice to married band directors and shares how his high school sweetheart has stood by his side throughout his career and helped raise four children (all Davis Band alums!) and seven grandchildren (with number eight on the way).
